Willy Rizzo the Furniture Designer
Few people know that Willy Rizzo
, notorious as photographer of the stars, also designed pieces of furniture.
It wasn’t until he reached a pinnacle in his career as a photographer ( he famously photographed Marilyn Monroe just two weeks before she died) that this Italian-born, true bon viveur felt inspired to create furniture. His influential A-list friends insisted on having items designed by him after they saw his Roman apartment furnished with sofas, coffee tables, consoles, hi-fi furniture, all originally created by Rizzo.
Furniture was far from being just a whim and in 1968, he decided to start his own company outside Rome, with his team growing quickly from 8 to 150 employees. He sells In 1978, to return to photography.
